Food Subtitute Part I

Have you ever experience while cooking you forgot to buy in the market the ingredient for that recipe? or you ran out of baking powder, honey,tomato sauce? I have a list of food subtitutes below which I think could help you in time of need:

Butter : margarine

1 cup cake flour: 1 cup all-purpose flour minus 2 tablespoons

1 teaspoon baking powder : 1/4 teaspoon baking
Soda plus 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

1 tablespoon cornstarch : 2 tablespoons aii purpose flour

1 cup buttermilk or sour milk: 1 cup plain yogurt or
1 tablespoon white vinegar or lemon juice
stirred into 1 cup milk and allowed to stand for 5
minutes

1 cup corn syrup: 1 cup granulated sugar plus
1/4 cup liquid (any one that’s called for in recipe)

1 cup honey : 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar plus 1/4 cup liquid

2 egg yolks : 1 whole egg

1 square unsweetened chocolate : 3 tablespoons
Unsweetened cocoa powder plus 1 tablespoon
Melted butter or margarine.

1 ounce semisweet baking chocolate : 1
Ounce unsweetened chocolate plus 1 tablespoon
Sugar

1 can tomatoes : 2 1/2 cups chopped, peeled,
Fresh tomatoes, simmered for about 10 minutes

1 cup catsup or tomato-based chili sauce : 1
Can (8 ounce) tomato sauce plus 1/2 cup granulated
Sugar and 2 tablespoons white vinegar.

1/2 cup sliced leeks : 1/2 cup sliced shallots or 1/2
Cup green onions

1 cup plain yogurt: 1 cup sour cream

1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs : 3/4 to 1 teaspoon dried herbs.

1 cup red wine : 1 cup apple ceder or beef broth

1 cup white wine : 1 cup apple Juice, apple cider, or chicken broth

1 cup brown packed sugar : 1 cup granulated
Sugar plus 2 tablespoons molasses or dark corn
Syrup

1 cup granulated sugar : 1 cup light brown
sugar (packed) or 2 cups powdered sugar

1 teaspoon Allspice: 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

1 teaspoon baking powder : 1/4 teaspoon baking
soda plus 5/8 teaspoon cream of tartar

2 teaspoons beef stock base : 1 beef bouillon cube Instant

1/3 cup bread crumbs : dry 1 slice of bread

1 cup broth, beef or chicken: 1 bouillon cube
dissolved In 1 cup bolling water, 1 teaspoon
powdered broth base dissolved in 1 cup boiling water.
